The Delhi School of Economics with its constituent departments - Economics, Geography and Sociology - is an institution of academic excellence in India. The Department of Economics at the Delhi School of Economics is one of the best in the country. We have the largest Masters programme in the country (and, possibly, anywhere in the world).

The Placement Cell is an important development in the life of the Department. Starting from scratch, over the last twelve years the Placement Cell of the Department of Economics has gone from strength to strength. With the liberalization of the economy, new avenues of employment have emerged. At the same time, the older sectors find themselves in a more competitive environment. And suddenly, the market starts to appreciate a well-trained economist. So, whether it is an investment bank or a financial newspaper, anyone requiring some depth in economic matters looks for a graduate from the Department.
It is therefore not surprising at all that the Placement Cell has been a resounding success. It is only a matter of time before other employers (who are clinging on to the outdated notion of hiring generalists) come flocking to us.
I wish the Placement Cell all the very best in the coming years.
The year 1998 marked the inception of the Placement Cell at the Department of Economics, Delhi School of Economics and the beginning of a pursuit of new opportunities. Over the last twelve years the placement cell has consistently attained new heights, explored diverse fields and attended to the changing career requirements of the students of this institution.

The Placement Cell now arranges regular interactive sessions with eminent scholars, corporate executives and experts so that students gain knowledge related to the industry. I wish the Placement Programme attains greater heights this year in terms of final success in placements and our students prove worthy of the prestige associated with the Delhi School of Economics. My best wishes to the Placement Cell for the current year. |

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the Placement Programme of the Department of Economics, Delhi School of Economics, for Placements 2010-11. The Placement Programme of the Department of Economics is now in its twelfth year. Since its inception, it has both benefited from and facilitated the interaction between our students and industry. Its success can be attributed to the synergy between the department and the corporate sector, and the fact that the skill set and domain knowledge of our students are much sought after in the corporate world. |
In the past few years the placement rate has been close to 100%. Our students have been placed in diverse areas such as economic research, finance, macroeconomic modelling, policy making, sales and marketing, analytics, insurance, risk and investment analysis, banking, consultancy, economic and financial journalism and the media. Without doubt, our students are amongst the finest budding economists in the country, and have carved a niche for themselves in various avenues.
Of course, much can be said about the training imparted in the Department of Economics, Delhi School of Economics, which is well-known for its emphasis on academic excellence. With its stringent selection procedures, it recruits the best students from all over India. The students are rigorously trained in the theoretical and applied aspects of economics and are thus well-equipped to handle analytical as well as quantitative issues that help them to meet the challenges of the corporate and financial world. In a nutshell, the department takes the best, trains the best, and produces the best.
I am confident that the synergies between the department and industry will strengthen further over the years and that we can look forward to a mutually rewarding placement exercise.
