Aahan Annual Fest 2010

Aahan 2010, the first ever annual festival of its kind at Delhi School of Economics brought forth a concurrence of events that could showcase both the intellectual prowess of students as well as the artist in them. Events included a Panel Discussion on ‘Special Economic Zones & Issues of Land Acquisition’ with eminent economists such as Professor Amit Bhadhuri from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Dr. Surjit Bhalla from Oxus Research and Investments, and Professor Partha Mukhopadhyay from the Center for Policy Research as panelists. This was followed by Paper Presentations, a Quiz on Business, Finance, Economics and Politics, a Stock Market Simulation event as well as a gripping Debate. There were also events like Nukkad Natak (Street Play), Ad Mad, Treasure Hunt, Western Dance and Music Medley that intended to bring out the creativity of the participants.


Eostre- The DSE journal

The students of the Department of Economics, Delhi School of Economics launched a journal Eostre in the academic year 2009-10 as an initiative to take the dynamic subject of economics beyond the classroom and nudge the budding economist to understand and apply the subject in the real world. The journal seeks to provide a platform to discuss relevant concerns of world business and markets through a wide range of research papers, articles and reports.

In one year, Eostre has come a long way in achieving its aim of being a medium of exchange of ideas between students, faculty, leading researchers and the prestigious alumni of DSE. Eostre attempts to transform a mosaic of diverse perspectives and thought processes into an interesting and informative read.


International Conference on "Social Conflict"

On April 9-10, 2010, the Centre hosted an Interdisciplinary Conference on ‘Social Conflict’ jointly with the University of Oslo. The two day interdisciplinary workshop on social conflict was arranged to bring together multiple perspectives on the issue of Social Conflict. National and international scholars, from disciplines as varied as economics, sociology and political science, presented their research to each other and critically examined the work of others. Participants included scholars from New York University, Yale, University of Oslo, Jawaharlal Nehru University, University of Delhi and the Institute for Economic Growth. Speakers discussed both theoretical issues and case studies on conflict from a multi-disciplinary perspective.


Winter School 2009

The Center for Development Economics organizes an international event, the Winter School in December every year. The winter school is initiated with a series of expository lectures by invited eminent economists on their fields of research expertise. This is followed by short presentations of current research papers by scholars from India and abroad.

Last year, Professor Charles Manski of Northwestern University delivered a series of lectures on econometric theory, entitled ‘Identification for Prediction and Decision’. We also had Professor William Thomson of Rochester University delivering a series of lectures on cooperative game theory, entitled ‘Adjudication of Conflicting Claims’.In addition to these lectures, short research talks were given by scholars from Centre de Sciences Humanites (New Delhi), Dartmouth College (Hanover, USA), Delhi School of Economics, Institute of Financial Management and Research (Chennai), Indian Statistical Institute (Delhi), Indian Statistical Institute (Kolkata), Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (Mumbai), International Monetary Fund, National University of Singapore and Universit'e Paris I Sorbonne. The Winter School gives an opportunity to all students and scholars to interact and engage in stimulating discussions with leading economists.


Lecture Series By Prof. Debraj Ray

The Centre hosted a special series of three lectures by Professor Debraj Ray on “Distribution and Development” between March 22 and 23, 2010. Professor Ray is Julius Silber Professor of Economics at New York University, and the author of numerous academic papers and books, including Development Economics, the leading textbook on economic development used in undergraduate curricula all over the world. The lecture attracted students and scholars from within Delhi University as well as outside.
